Another part of my “Swim Series” batiks!
This little guy is like THE REASON I started open water swimming.
They’re always so sleek, so curious, so perfectly comfortable slicing through the water.
It’s everything I want to be when I swim.
As luck would have it we had a sweet little seal join us for a bit on our swims.
Not too close.
He’d pop his head up...eyes just above the water and just watch.
Then as we swam along the shore line he’d follow us.
He’d often swim parallel to us as to keep the perfect distance but still be able to keep his eye on these strange creatures that have joined him in his ocean.
Honestly, it was terrifying being that close to a creature like that. Not necessarily because I thought he would attack (like I’m SURE otters would 😠) but more because we were in HIS territory.
There’s no running away when you’re in the water.
You’re just there, at their mercy, as they flit around you like it’s nothing.
I’ve never felt more intrigued & powerless at the same time.
This batik reminds me just how lucky I am to live in a place that I can swim with seals and connect with nature in a way that some people can only dream of.
